A spot has opened up on the WAYS Travel Fundraising team in NSW. The team hits coastal and regional towns to help deliver the message of major charities – and sign-up much-needed supporters for some of the World’s best-known campaigns.

The base rate is $700/week plus bonuses, with accommodation and travel also covered.

*Locations: coastal/regional shopping centres, main streets etc.
*Pay: hourly rates + bonuses + super + great incentives.
*All transport and accommodation PAID!
*Job duties: inspire members of the public to join major charities.
*Hours: Mon-Fri 9am to 5.30pm.

So, what’s the catch? Well, just that there’s only one spot and it will go to someone with the charisma, drive and energy to match the travel team. Only the best will be considered for this position.

The new recruit will be travelling with, and under the guidance of, WAYS’ best fundraisers. In the past couple of months the team has hit the Central Coast, Forster, Port Macquarie, as well as the South Coast towards Ulladulla and more.

Because WAYS charity partners include some of the world’s best-known movements, the travel team needs to be passionate, ethical and outgoing. Those with experience or anyone who views fundraising as a long-term option will be highly regarded.

WAYS Professional Fundraiser, Kate Baker spent a few minutes with us to speak about creating awareness for charities, connecting with people during their busy day & commitment to reach your goals.

Why did you become a Face to Face Fundraiser?
I wanted to have an experience. I love getting out there and speaking to so many different people. You really get a chance to get into the community and you really are changing a lot of people’s lives when you do get someone to support the charity. So it is quite a good thing to be doing.

What is the best thing about your working day?
Getting to meet a lot of different people. Even though you may not get a pledge straight away you are still getting the awareness out there for the cause that you are fundraising for. I met a guy yesterday who had just come back from Sri Lanka and he was building a school for kids in Sri Lanka which was just amazing. And that is the kind of stuff that we are doing working with Amnesty International right now. It was fantastic to have a chat to this guy.

Tell us about your favourite Charity & why
It would be Peter Mac. They are doing fantastic work and it touches base with me as I have a lot of family members with Cancer so it’s something that we can all work on together to make a difference.

You must meet some amazing people, any good stories to tell?
I spoke to a fellow the other day who was a refugee and he had not long been here, his family is still over in his home country and Amnesty are helping him at the moment trying to get his family over here in Australia with him. He had already signed up with us so he could get involved and support Amnesty which is just fantastic. I could see the difference that these Charities make to people’s lives. Although I am standing out here I can see that supporters who pledge money each month, I can see where their money is going and what it is doing to assist others.

What are the types of challenges that you face each day and how do you overcome them?
Nobody has time. Everybody seems to be so busy, involved in their own lives, they are so busy and they don’t even realise what is going on in the world. No one wants to stop and have a conversation. We all lead very busy lives but it’s important to stop and just be still. If I can get someone to stand still for 1 minute and listen, so I can inform them of what we are trying to do to help people. You may not get a pledge but if you can open their mind about what is happening in the world and that they can make a difference. Then maybe next time around they may be more inclined to stop and give. That’s what it’s really about.

Why should others become fundraisers for WAYS Fundraising?
They are a really excellent group of people. We have a lot of fun. Besides the actual charities that we work with, the guys at WAYS and all the fundraisers are just fantastic. It’s a good environment. There are lots of opportunities for growth. My Team Leader at the moment was promoted to Team Leader after only 2 weeks. If you have the determination you can do anything.

If you are looking for a rewarding & feel good job with real long term opportunities apply here now.

The WAYS Fundraising teams working to raise valuable funds for Amnesty International were saddened this week with the tragic execution of US death row prisoner Troy Davis.

Davis, now 42, was executed in the state of Georgia after being on death row for 20 years. His life was taken by lethal injection on Wednesday despite serious doubts surrounding his conviction.

On the same day, Iran publicly hanged a 17-year old boy convicted of killing a popular athlete despite international prohibitions against executing juveniles, while China executed a Pakistani national convicted of drug smuggling even though drug offences do not meet the threshold for “most serious” crimes in international law.

“This is a bleak day for human rights worldwide. By executing these individuals, these countries are moving away from the global trend to abolish the death penalty,” said Guadalupe Marengo, Amnesty International’s Deputy Director for the Americas.

“Countries that retain the death penalty very often defend their position by claiming that their use of the death penalty is consistent with international human rights law. Their actions yesterday blatantly contradict these claims,” she said.

Amnesty International activists have campaigned extensively against the death penalty. In recent days, nearly one million signatures on Troy Davis’ behalf have been delivered to authorities in Georgia to urge them to commute his death sentence: vigils and events have been held in approximately 300 locations around the world.

Troy Davis was sentenced to death in 1991 for the murder of police officer Mark Allen Macphail in Savannah, Georgia. The case against him primarily rested on witness testimony.

Since his 1991 trial, seven of key nine witnesses recanted or changed their testimony, some alleging police coercion.

Iranian teenager Alireza Molla-Soltani was hanged Wednesday morning in front of a large crowd in the city of Karaj.

He was sentenced to death last month for stabbing Ruhollah Dadashi, a popular athlete during a driving dispute on 17 July. The 17-year old said he panicked and stabbed Ruhollah Dadashi in self-defence after the athlete attacked him in the dark, according to local media reports.

Zahid Husain Shah, who was arrested in 2008 for drug smuggling, was executed in China by lethal injection on Wednesday.

On the same day, Lawrence Brewer was also executed in Huntsville, Texas. He was sentenced to death for his role in the killing of James Byrd, Jr. in June 1998.

Amnesty International opposes the death penalty in all cases, without exception. To get involved with raising money for such amazing causes check out the latest ethical careers at WAYS Fundraising. Together we can make a difference.

For WAYS Fundraiser Andy Stoddard, finding success in the world of Fundraising couldn’t have happened any faster. He received his first promotion to Team Leader after just two-weeks on the job.

If you asked Andy, he’d probably tell you it was easy. He’s worked in the world of Fundraising in previous jobs. But Campaign Manager for Victoria Steve Lane says the quick rise often comes when people have their own expectations.

“It can be a little bit of a gamble sometimes to have someone become a Team Leader so early but if someone comes in and says in an interview “I want to be a Team Leader” then, the chances are, you’ll get there,” he says.

“It sounds simple but you can quickly put someone on trial and set some targets for them. If they manage to motivate other people and stay focused then anything is possible.

“The true ability of someone is shown when they come in and have their own expectations, their own standards, and their own goals which are set really high – that’s when it all falls into place.”

We checked in with Andy on the streets of Melbourne to see what drives him achieve as a Professional Fundraiser.

Why did you become a Professional Fundraiser?

I like the fun aspect behind the job, meeting new people, talking about different things that you are passionate about. I’ve fundraised before and I just love working for charities, especially those that I am passionate about. The cancer charities, you know, everyone has been affected in some way by cancer and it’s just great to raise awareness on what these charities do and explain what great things they do.

What is the best thing about your working day?

Meeting loads of new people on the street. Plus striving to meet targets in order to help out the charity.

Do you find it difficult to approach people?

No, not at all. I am a confident person, I’ve recently traveled around the world so I have met quite a lot of new people through that experience, and so I try and take that onto the street and it just comes naturally. So if you are a backpacker or have traveled a lot and are used to being in various locations and meeting lots of people from all walks of life, this is a brilliant job and you will find it easy.

Tell us about your favourite charity and why?

I would have to say my favourite charity would be Child Fund because I sponsor a child through Child Fund. However, now I am working for WAYS I have been exposed to the brilliant work that Peter Mac Cancer Centre does and I am very happy working on the charity’s behalf.

You must meet some amazing people, any good stories to tell?

You meet loads of people from all walks of life – that’s the beauty of it. You speak to so many people every single day, you never know who is coming up and you can sign anyone up as a supporter – it could be a politician, or just anyone, you don’t know. You don’t know their story, and that’s a part of the rapport building, getting to know a bit about them and their personal story. They also get to learn a bit about you and that’s how they become comfortable talking to you. It doesn’t feel like work, you are just chatting really.

What type of qualities do you need to be a good Fundraiser?

You need to be confident within yourself and have great social skills, you need be able to talk to people from all backgrounds. You also need a good sense of persuasion, because people will object and you have to be able to turn that conversation around.

Why should others become Fundraisers for WAYS Fundraising?
It’s a fantastic company to work for. I had fantastic training and the support so far is brilliant. There are plenty of opportunities to progress through the company and I hope to do that very soon.

When it comes to career progression, Fundraising can be one fast-paced ride. Most of the people who make great Fundraisers quickly find themselves managing a team and driving their own results. From there, many move on to oversee their own campaigns or multiple teams in the field.

Simon Quirke is a Training Field Operations Manager with WAYS Fundraising. He is integral in driving results needed to ensure the success of charity campaigns. Here he offers some insight into the type of career progression that only Fundraising can provide.

Tell us about your role at WAYS Fundraising.
As a Training Field Operations Manager, my role is to directly manage and develop the field of fundraisers in NSW and to manage a campaign manager who does a similar job in Vic. This includes everything from setting up incentives and running competitions to reporting and overseeing any problems. It’s important to innovate and have fresh ideas when coaching people to perform at their best.
I got started in fundraising about five and a half years ago. I never intended for fundraising to be my career. In fact, it was a stopover job. It didn’t take me long to realise that this is the only job for me and working in any other industry just won’t do!

What is the best thing about your job and working with Fundraisers?
There are so many great things about being a Fundraiser and now a fundraising manager. Everyone who makes it as a Fundraiser has buckets of personality and is great company. Aside from that, it’s great being in complete control of your job satisfaction, progress and even your salary! No other industry can teach you so much about yourself and how people interact with each other. Exposing yourself to a thousand people every day shows you the weird and wonderful variety of people!

You must have been to some awesome places and met amazing people.
Well, in my career I’ve signed up about 6,000 people for charity and to do that you’ve got to have about 60,000 conversations and approach about ten times that many again! In speaking to so many people, I’m sure you can imagine I’ve met some of the best and some of the worst… Take it from me, if you jump on board as a Fundraiser, you’ll have plenty of wacky stories of your own to tell!!

Is it possible to progress from a Fundraiser to a role like yours? What type of experience or qualities do you need?
Of course! Everyone who’s ever been successful in this industry has started out on the front line. For myself, I’ve always had the highest expectation for myself and those around me. I am super competitive and I always wanted my team and my own score to be on top. I think if you demand the best from yourself and put your best foot forward you can’t go wrong. In fundraising you get back what you put in.

Why should others become Fundraisers for WAYS Fundraising?
Well, WAYS is a young company which is growing so fast, there’s room for so much more growth and anyone who comes in and shows their mettle will be well looked after. Cheesy as it sounds, once your part of the WAYS family, you won’t want to be anywhere else.
